What is a crew cab vs extended cab – which should you get?
These days pickups are everywhere. The days where trucks were used only for work are long gone. Modern pickup trucks can be outfitted to be as opulent as the iconic brands in luxury. There is a pickup truck out there for you, regardless of whether you want the lap of luxury or need a workhorse. Once you figure out if you require 4WD (or just Rear-Wheel Drive), the next big decision is to figure out what cab size is best for you.
A regular cab pickup has only one row of seats with a small amount of storage space and legroom, as the name suggests. A regular cab was once the only configuration available on pickups. In most regular cabs, the seatbacks practically touch the rear of the cab. This is the practical version of a pickup truck and usually comes with manual locks and windows. A regular cab is made to work, not for hauling your friends and family.
As you could probably guess, an Extended Cab truck (occasionally known as a Double Cab truck) is just a Regular Cab with extra space behind the front seating. When they were first introduced, extended cab trucks were only available for purchase as 2-door models and had small jump seats in the back. Occasionally known as a Double Cab truck, these trucks now feature tiny, second-row doors for easy access to the rear cargo area. Even though there are 2 rows of seats, an Extended Cab pickup truck wouldn’t be the best vehicle for road trips, even though it can carry more passengers.
While not as apparent as the other cab types, a Crew Cab pickup truck has four regular-size doors and the room to carry, well, your ‘crew.’ Crew Cab pickups are made to transport more of the driver’s stuff and people. In some circles, these pickups have replaced the 4-door sedan as the family vehicle. A Crew Cab pickup truck’s more powerful engines and bigger size are not seen in the sedan market while still providing the legroom and comfort that families desire.
