If the car battery checks out fine, there are other trouble areas that could be causing the issue. If the vehicle battery isn’t the reason for your flickering car lights, you might be looking at a dying bulb. Bulbs are an easy and quick fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new LED bulbs.
If your vehicle has a blown fuse, you may be looking at a larger issue than you had originally thought. In most cases, a fuse only dies when there is excess electrical current flowing through it. For example, if the anti-lock brakes are connected to a 10amp fuse, and the fuse receives more than 10amps of electricity, the fuse will fail. In this situation, this could also cause your anti-lock brakes to fail. If there is a fuse that continues to fail, bring your car in so we can thoroughly diagnose the bigger, potentially more serious problem.
Lights flickering on your dash could also be one of the signs that your alternator is dying. Consider this, you have battery power to start your vehicle, but the alternator provides the power when running. If you drive an older vehicle with halogen headlights, you may notice them slowly get dimmer with a dying alternator. For newer cars with LED or HID lights, they may flicker on and off or just stop working altogether.
A bad light switch, either the headlight switch knob or an interior lights dimmer, should be considered if you have flickering car lights. In some rare situations, replacing a worn switch may solve the flickering light issue, especially in vehicles with excessive wear or older cars. If your car doesn’t fall into either category, it could be symptoms of a bigger concern with the electrical system.
